San Severino Marche Energy - Smart Grid

A few weeks ago I was reading an article on the accomplishments of the Mayor and local administration of San Severino. I was very happy to see that a project for a hydro-electric plant had been approved to be located within San Severino's territory by the Province Government.

This is an important first step in the right direction. As mentioned in my previous article "San Severino Marche - A New World" , we, as a society, must begin rectifying the environmental damage we have caused and are still causing. In addition to implementing renewable energy production, we must also begin using energy in a less wasteful way. As mentioned in Thomas Friedman's book "Hot, Flat and Crowded" , there have been several smart grid pilot projects in the USA. A smart energy grid allows for interaction between user and supplier, with the interface provided by digital communication between grids. The smart grid is the future; every day there is more information available about this new system.

The November issue of Time magazine features an article on this subject in the Small Business section, entitled "Neighboring Technologies". Here in Italy with the EU 20-20-20 objectives (reduce Co2 by 20% by 2020), there is significant activity: ENEL Spa has been leading research in this field and setting international performance benchmarks. In the article "Le Smart Grids", on Enel's site, they state that the electrical grid of the future must comply with four requirements: accessibility, reliance, effectiveness and flexibility. In the article "Smart grids: start experimenting in southern Italy", published on ecoblog.it, the author states that the Italian Minister for Economic Development has signed an agreement with Enel to develop such smart grids in the regions of Sicily, Apulia, Campania and Calabria. The focus will be on small to medium renewable energy-producing facilities interconnected with the electric grid, instead of one large plant providing the entire power supply. To help local governments convert to an energy-responsible policy and to strive to meet the 20-20-20 goal, the Italian Ministry of the Territory has launched the campaign "Sustainable Energy for Italy", within the wider "Sustainable Energy Europe (SEE)".

On January 29, 2008 following the second edition of the European week for sustainable energy (EUSEW 2008) , the European Commission created the Covenant of Mayors, to help local governments get actively involved. I was very pleased to see that 16 out of 20 cities in the Marche region were in the province of Macerata, and I hope that the government of the city of San Severino Marche will take steps to join. By participating, a city agrees to create an Action Plan to meet and exceed the 20-20-20 goal within one year. It also agrees to provide progress reports every two years. It's a great step.

The future of humanity depends on the choices that will be made today by each one of us. Together we can all make a difference.

San Severino Marche Energia

 

Qualche settimana fa leggevo un articolo sul lavoro svolto dal Sindaco e dall'Amministrazione Comunale di San Severino dove si citava che la Provincia aveva approvato un progetto per la realizzazione di un impianto idro-elettrico nel territorio del Comune.

Questo è un importante primo passo nella direzione giusta. Come scrivevo nel mio precedente articolo "San Severino Marche - Un Nuovo Mondo" , noi, come società, dobbiamo cominciare a pensare a ridurre i danni all'ambiente che noi stessi abbiamo provocato e che continuiamo a causare. Dovremmo pertanto da un lato razionalizzare l'uso dell'energia e dall'altro incrementarne la produzione con fonti rinnovabili. Come citato nel libro di Thomas Friedman "Hot, Flat and Crowded" , ci sono già stati alcuni progetti pilota di Reti Intelligenti, Smart Grid, negli USA. Una Smart Grid permette l'interazione tra l'utente e l'ente che fornisce energia, con un'interfaccia digitale che permette alle reti di comunicare tra loro. La smart grid è il futuro; ogni giorno possiamo trovare editoriali su questo nuovo sistema.

L'edizione di Novembre della rivista Time magazine riporta un articolo su questo argomento nella sezione Small Business intitolato "Neighboring Technologies". L' Italia a tale proposito ha aderito agli obbiettivi dell'EU 20-20-20 (ridurre CO2 di 20% entro 2020); anche ENEL Distribuzione e' attiva nella ricerca in questo campo e ha gia' stabilito dei livelli di benchmark in termini di performance a livello internazionale. Nell'articolo "Le Smart Grids", sul sito Enel, si legge che la rete elettrica del futuro dovrà rispondere a quattro requisiti: accessibilità, affidabilità, efficacia e flessibilità. Sul sito ecoblog.it si afferma che il Ministero per lo Sviluppo Economico ha firmato un accordo con Enel Distribuzione per lo sviluppo delle smart grids nelle regioni Sicilia, Puglia, Campania e Calabria, su impianti di piccole e medie dimensioni collegati con la rete elettrica, piuttosto che un unico grande impianto.

Per far recepire alle amministrazioni locali politiche energetiche più responsabili secondo gli obbiettivi del 20-20-20, il Ministero dell'Ambiente e della Tutela del Territorio e del Mare ha lanciato una campagna di Energia Sostenibile per l'Italia, legata alla gia' esistente "Energia Sostenibile per l'Europa - SEE".

Il 29 Gennaio, 2008, a seguito della seconda edizione della settimana Europea per l'energia sostenibile (EUSEW 2008), la Commissione Europea, ha creato il Patto dei Sindaci per coinvolgere attivamente le amministrazioni locali.

16 dei 20 Comuni della Regione Marche che hanno aderito sono della Provincia di Macerata e spero che la città di San Severino Marche si unisca quanto prima a questo gruppo. Le città partecipanti si impegnano a individuare un Piano d'Azione, entro un anno, per raggiungere gli obiettivi descritti nel 20-20-20, presentando, con cadenza biennale, un rapporto sullo stato di attuazione. Il futuro dell'umanità dipende dalle scelte che ognuno di noi fa oggi: insieme possiamo fare la differenza.
